One of our favorite sessions to photograph is the bridal portrait (or “bridals”). We are finding that this tradition is still relatively unheard of here in Alaska so we want to spend a little time talking about how fantastic bridals can be with Elegante Light Photography!
What is a bridal session?
Bridals are a long standing tradition that began in Europe for announcements and as keepsakes for parents, fiancé, and brides before hopping the pond to the U.S. over a decade ago where their popularity continues on the east coast. Originally, bridals were almost exclusively photographed in studio but today, the focus has shifted to an emphasis on showcasing the beauty and uniqueness of each bride so the options for locations are unlimited! Modern bridals are not the stuffy portraits of the past. Today they are creative expressions of the bride, so no matter if you are high fashion, playful, spontaneous, glamourous, quiet, sexy, country, or sophisticated, the bridal portrait is the artistic expression of you in your glorious gown!
What is the difference between bridals and photos from my wedding day?
Many brides tell us they prefer the candid, photojournalism style of photography. We also enjoy the way candid photos tell the story of the wedding day but we find that the photos our clients really respond to are the more artistic, creative, and stylized photos that we have worked together to create. The most significant difference between bridals and photos from your wedding day is that bridals allow us to photograph creative and gorgeous portraits in amazing locations that we may not have time to get to on your wedding day. Bridals are also a fantastic opportunity to add a high-fashion look or pose, try different accessories, a potential wedding day hairstyle, photo worthy make-up, and of course, pick up posing techniques and our favorite, gain comfort and confidence in front of our cameras!
What can I expect when I have bridals with Elegante Light Photography?
Having bridal portraits with Elegante Light Photography is a lot of fun! This is a no-stress event that is all about YOU! Together we will discuss and create an artistic and exciting session to bring out the glamour, passion, love, mystery, and playfulness to showcase the essence and uniqueness of you. We ask that our brides come to their session alone because as much as we love our friends and family, their presence can cause stress and self-consciousness. We want our brides to be able to relax, have fun, and allow their personalities to fly in front of our lens!
When are my bridals scheduled?
To stay true to their artistic nature and allow for variety of locations and poses, we typically schedule the bridals a few weeks in advance of your wedding.
What do I bring to my bridal session?
In addition to your beautiful wedding gown, we suggest bringing your hair piece or veil, wedding day shoes, any accessories (and potential accessories), and any other creative or fashion accessory we may have discussed for your stylized session. We recommend having your hair and makeup professionally done. Most professionals will include a trial run before the wedding and scheduling this the day of your bridal session is a great idea! You do not need to order a bouquet for your session but if you would love to have one as an option, a hand-tied bouquet from a local grocery store is an inexpensive option.
We hope this has dispelled some of the mystery surrounding the bridal portrait and hope you are now as excited as we are to be showcasing this tradition here in Alaska! Either in our lovely studio or on location, we know you will love this girl-time as much as we do!
Happy planning!

Great post! Bridals are not common where I live either, I wish more brides took the time to capture these special portraits!
Love this post too!!! Bridal sessions are a must.
I wish more brides would do bridal sessions, it’s just not a “thing” to do here in SoCal!
