We have had quite the busy past few weeks but we made time recently to tour the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel & Spa in downtown Anchorage. We visited with event coordinator, Irina Valerio, to learn more about what the Sheraton can offer couples looking for a ceremony and reception venue (besides a gorgeous spa and fantastic views from the top floor ballroom)!
Q: What are some of the special features the Sheraton can offer couples?
A: The Sheraton is a Starwood property and rewards members receive one point for every dollar spent (cash in those points on the honeymoon)! The hotel has approximately 25,000 square feet of meeting space on the property which provides great flexibility for various group sizes, along with also providing an option for separate ceremony and reception space. The Sheraton also features full catering, bar service, 370 guest rooms, professional event staff onsite, Starbucks, a restaurant, and a beautiful spa for services and the option of getting ready in the spa before the ceremony.
Q: What size groups can be accommodated?
A: The Sheraton has many event spaces with flexible configurations to accommodate intimate events to large scale parties up to 1000 guests.
Q: Can blocks of rooms be setup for out of town guests?
A: Yes! Blocks of rooms with special event pricing for guests can be arranged when booking your event with the Sheraton (which will also include a complimentary overnight for couple). Nice!
Q: How does the catering work?
A: All food and beverage must be provided by the Sheraton for events held in the hotel but the Sheraton offers both standard and fully customizable menus, including many available cultural food options. Of course couples may taste sample menus before making the selection for their own event. Because wedding cakes are so personal and such an art, the Sheraton encourages couples to provide their own.
Q: What is the advantage of choosing a hotel as the venue?
A: One of the most significant advantages is the full service aspect of the property. For the most part, everything couples may need from guest accommodations, getting ready rooms, space for the ceremony and reception, to food and bar service is available onsite and inside, where the unpredictable Alaskan weather is not an issue. Additionally, the Sheraton provides professional event staff onsite throughout the event.
Q: What should couples know about decorating, setup, and break-down?
A: All tables, chairs, dance floor, and table servings are available as part of an event rental package. Cleanup and teardown is provided by the Sheraton for anything owned by the hotel. Linens, floral arrangements, etc. are usually provided by outside vendors contracted by couple (Irina is happy to provide recommendations). There are some limited centerpiece items available from the Sheraton.
Q: How soon should couples reserve?
A: Couples should plan on reserving their date six months to a year prior to their event depending upon the size of wedding, guest rooms needed, and whether or not the event is during peak season.
Irina was a wonderful guide to the property and we appreciate the time she spent with us so that we could pass on the highlights of the Sheraton to you. If a hotel venue appeals to you, please contact Irina at 907.343.3115 or by email at [email protected] to schedule your own tour.
