This week we had the great pleasure of visiting with Tara Gondek, owner of Bateau Bridal Boutique located in Anchorage, Alaska. Tara graciously answered a few questions that we could pass on to you in your search for the perfect gown.
Q: When should brides begin their search for their gown?
A: Once the wedding date is known, a good rule to follow is plan to place your order 6-9 months from that date. Beginning a search too early or before the wedding date has been set can be problematic because given enough time, tastes in styles may change. Waiting too long to order may reduce your options considerably by making it impossible to order and have the gown arrive in time. Tara also reminds her brides that gowns are cut to a standard dress size and it is rare for a gown to not require alterations. Leave 4-6 weeks for alterations.
Q: What can brides do to better prepare for their dress selection appointment?
A: Do a little pre-appointment research to develop a vision for the day. You will want your dress selection to support your wedding day vision. Begin to note the styles, fabrics, and shape of gowns that appeal to you. Do you like satin or lace, fitted or flowing, etc.? (Note: See prior Elegante Light Photography blogs on developing your Vision.)
Q: What can brides do at the appointment to make it a better experience?
At least for the first appointment when you are narrowing down your style, limit the number of people you invite to just a few. Juggling many different opinions when you are trying to figure out your own can be stressful and a bit overwhelming. Perhaps consider just inviting your mother, a sister, or a close friend this first visit. When you do arrive, it is a good idea to bring any shape-wear, strapless bra, or undergarments that you would like to wear with the gown.
Q: What style trends are you seeing?
A: Lace and the Bohemian looks have been very popular among brides while the A-Line and fit and flare silhouette continue to be a good choice as they offer very flattering fits to most brides.
Q: What budget trends are you seeing?
A: Instead of holding onto their wedding dresses to pass down to daughters, many brides are opting to resell their gowns on consignment and are handing down their veils, an ornate head-piece, earrings, or other accessory. This growing trend can also benefit budget conscious brides because the gently used gowns can put a beautiful gown into their price range where it may not have been when new.
Tara meticulously selects dress designers of quality and fair-wage sewn gorgeous gowns to bring to her discerning clients and offers both new and consigned gowns by appointment only so that she can give them her undivided attention.
