Some of you will embrace the idea of having a theme for your wedding, while others will cringe because for you, it brings images of over-the-top garish red hearts and roses at every turn. It is certainly possible to carry a theme too far but hear me out on why you need one and how you can use one effectively.
A theme is the working version of your vision… the idea to keep in mind while selecting dresses, location, colors, ceremony and reception decorations, invitations, flowers, cake, and any other item for your special day. It acts as a blueprint or backbone to your event and helps guide you in making consistent choices throughout your planning process. Without one, you run the risk of your event looking a little random or haphazard. Even if you are pressed for time, using a theme will help keep your event from looking thrown together.
A little goes a long way…
An effective theme is often a subtle one. Colors, flowers, and all other decoration details should play a supporting role of highlighting YOU and your vision on the special day. A goal when developing your theme will be to have it obvious enough that your event appears lovely and cohesive, yet subtle enough that guests may not recognize the theme immediately.
Theme examples:
- Forrest Glen: Decorations have a subtle wood texture or tone to them, floral arrangements are more natural and incorporate twigs and ferns in the flowers, table settings use wood toned chargers and colors are natural, invitations have a subtle embossing similar to wood, dresses flow like wood sprites, etc.
- French Garden: Decorations are more ornate, colors are in pinks and gold, arrangements are symmetrical with formal flowers and topiaries, gowns are more traditionally feminine and invitations formal, etc.
If you are struggling with converting your vision into a theme, contact us to come by our studio to thumb through one of the many theme specific wedding planning books available in our library.
Remember that no matter what theme you come up with, using one will help you make consistent event selections and should ALWAYS support your vision.
